Nasserpuria Memon Jamaat, Canada’s Eid Milan cum Dinner program was celebrated on Saturday September 26, 2009 in the evening at Pleasant View Community Centre in town of Scarborough in Greater Toronto, Canada. Jammat’s members, with their family members and children, from the town and from far areas attended the Eid Milan. The event started, as is the tradition, with Holy Quran recitation followed by its English translation by Zulfa Varwani, a very young member of the Jamaat. Then two very young members of Jamaat, Zulfa Varwani and Yousuf Varwani recited Qaseedah Al Burdah in Arabic language, and then another very young member of Jamaat, Ramla Yakub recited a Naat/Qaseedah in English. Brother A. Hameed Hathiyani, a Committee Member and Master of Ceremony, then welcomed the members, wished them Eid Mubarak and thanked all the participants for attending this program, which is mark of unity among Jamaat members. He praised young members of Jammat for recitation of Holy Quran, Qaseedah and Naat and emphasized on maintaining Islamic tradition as well as our Memon culture, tradition and heritage while living in a new country Canada. In the program no VIP culture was noted. There was no decorated stage and no lots of hosts. A simple small table was there to keep papers and all the announcements were made mostly in Memoni and sometime in English. In order to provide entertainment to younger members of Jammat i.e. children of all ages, Jamaat had arranged the services of a juggler cum clown, who, with the help and participation of children, performed various acts of juggling e.g. games of ball, ring, one wheel cycle and many magic tricks and then gave out various designs of balloons to all the children. At around 7-10 p.m., it was time of Maghrib Namaaz. There was also arrangement of Iftaar for those, who had fasted for the month of Shawal. After Iftaar, Maghrib Namaaz was performed ba-jamaat, which was lead by Community elder Mohataram Mohammed Basheer Hathiyani. After Maghrib Namaaz, while the volunteers were busy in dinner arrangement, Brother A. Hameed Hathiyani, the Master of Ceremony, in his brief speech, talked on our sweet Memoni Boli, and emphasized that our Memon Boli is our identity, culture, heritage and honor. Particularly he told: "MEMON AYO, MEMONI BOLO, MEMONI ZABAAN MEIN MITHAASH AAY, MEMONI ZABAAN PAANJI PEHCHAAN AAY" etc. etc.Now it was dinner time. Before dinner, an elderly member was requested to recite Bismillah, and after he recited Bismillah, the dinner was started. And it was scene of 60 years ago! On the floor, dastarkhwan was spread and dinner was served in THALA between 4/5 people. There was no lavish menu, but very simple items were there, shared by 4/5 members combined in one THALA in a very cordial and peaceful manner. After meal was eaten by members, almost each THALA was so clean like it appeared as washed. There was no wastage of food etc. and it was like a reminder of what Almighty Allah has said in Holy Quran about avoiding of wastage: "Eat and drink, but do not waste, for Allah does no love wasters." (7:31) After dinner, a Jamaat member Brother A. Hameed Hathiyani recited a heart provoking Nazm in Urdu emphasizing the philosophy of life. Here are its four lines: "DUNIYA HEY EK INSTITUTION, HAM NE LIYA HEY IS MEIN ADMISSION, ALLAH NE DIYA HEY EK CONSTITUITION, HAMAARE NABI (SAW) NE DIYA HEY IS KA PRESENTATION…………….. " Now it was a Riddle time for ladies and gents. Brother A. Hameed Hathiyani presented some riddles for ladies and gents, which were very interesting. A Memoni Riddle was also presented. Here is this brief Riddle, which was published earlier in MEMON ALAM: "MATHE SORO (16), NICHE SORO (16), BADHEY JO RANG DHORO DHORO, ANDER VETHI BATKI BAAI, WAQAEE MEIN HI AAFAT AAY, PAHELO NAAM BATAK BOLI, BIYO NAAM BANDUK JI GOLI, LAMBAAI MEIN HI PURE PURI, TRIJO NAAM TEJ CHHURI." (Answer: ZABAAN). Then Jamaat`s active member Mohammed Shabbir presented some old memories of his life. Then NMJ`s past president Brother Zaheer Salyani presented some old memories of his life and also presented some jokes to entertain the members. Then Brother Nadeem Saliyani, an active member also presented some jokes and some songs with his beautiful voice. He also presented a heart provoking Urdu poem about parents, which was a reminder to children about their duties towards parents and a great tribute to parents. Mohataram A. Qadir Salyani, a senior guest from Mombasa Jamaat was also present in the program. He is regarded as "Mohammed Rafi of Mombasa." He also entertained the members with jokes and songs in Memoni and Urdu with his beautiful voice and got much appreciation and applause from the members. He sang Memoni Nazm on Ramadan and Eid. He also sang one Memon parody song in Qawwali style. Then Brother A. Hameed Hathiyani requested Jamaat`s President Brother Zulfikar Hathiyani to address the members. Brother Zulfikar Hathiyani welcomed the members and wished them Eid Mubarak and thanked them for attending this show of unity and brotherhood to celebrate Eid by Jamaat. He announced about various Eid Mubarak messages received from local and overseas Memons and Jamaats. He thanked all the volunteers for their self-less services to Jamaat in such programs and then award to these volunteers were presented with the hands of Jamaat`s past president. He hoped that these volunteers and other members will maintain the same spirit to serve the Jamaat. Prizes to winners of past competition were also presented. Also note of appreciation was passed for those Youth committee members, who had served outside Islamic and other organizations on volunteer basis. It was also announced about Jamaat`s own Community Centre, a future project of Jamaat. The President also announced about The Holy Quran English translation and commentary by first Memon (late) Adam Esabhai, and mentioned that Insha Allah its review will be put on NMJ web site and also will be published in NMJ`s publication AN NAJM, next year. To raise the fund for Jamaat, an Eid Cake was auctioned and a lady member Mrs. Asifa Shafi Yakoob bought the cake and later this cake was distributed among all members. As it is tradition to give Eid Gifts to children on festival of Eid, Lady Committee members distributed nicely wrapped Gifts to all the children present there. At the end, the President, in his concluding speech thanked all the participants, wished a happy life to newly married couples of Jamaat and wished good health and speedy recovery of sick members.
